Your baby's turning a year old soon, and it's time to celebrate with a cake smash portrait session. Our cake smash sessions always turn out so precious, and are a great way to capture that first birthday milestone, but believe it or not, sometimes one-year-olds don't want to eat/play in their birthday cakes. I KNOW! It's hard to imagine a child not liking cake, but it's true.
No need to worry! We're here to help make sure your cake smash session is a huge success!
Here are just a few simple tips to follow that will help your session run smoothly.
Tip 1 - Make sure your little one has cake at least 2-3 times prior to your session. It doesn't have to be a lot - just enough to get them used to the flavor and texture.
We understand that you may not want them eating a lot sugar and we totally get it, but honestly they probably won't eat that much. It's important that they at least play in the cake. It's amazing how many babies don't know what to do with the cake at a cake smash session.
A couple of thoughts on this tip... Make sure the cake they "practice" with is the same type of cake you want for the session - same color and texture of frosting and same flavor. Otherwise they may not recognize the cake, and may not know what to do. I've seen this happen many times.
Make sure the cake is not cold from the bakery fridge. Babies usually don't like cold cake.
Tip 2 - Serve cake on the floor! Yes, on the floor. The session will take place on the floor, and most little ones are used to eating only in their highchairs, so lay out a sheet or some paper and let them eat on the floor. Family picnic! I know it sounds crazy, but some baby's are super sensitive to change and may not understand why we want them to eat on the floor. Trust me, I've seen it all.
Tip 3 - Make sure they have breakfast before session time. Our cake smash sessions are first thing in the morning, but it's never a good idea to have cake on an empty stomach. It's best for baby to be a little hungry so that they will want to eat cake, so we recommend just a light breakfast.
Tip 4 - Bring along snacks - If your little one really doesn't want to eat cake on smash day, no worries, we have a few other tricks we can try. We can hide puffs, Cheerios, gold fish, etc. on the back side of the cake. Also, please remember to bring a bottle or cup for them. Part way through the session they might need a drink.
